Hello everyone today we are going to learn about the food pyramid.


A food pyramid is a representation of the optimal number of servings to be eaten each day from each of the basic food groups. The first pyramid was published in Sweden in 1974. The 1992 pyramid introduced by the United States Department of Agriculture was called the " Food Guide pyramid".


Cereals 

Cereals are wheat, rice, maize, oat, barley, rye etc are Cereals. contribute 75% of calories and 67% of protein intake and are the most important source of food all over the world with 60% of calories and protein consumed provided 10000-15000J/kg of energy, approximately 15-20 times more than fruits and Vegetables.


Vegetable and Fruit

Fruits and vegetables contain many vitamins and minerals that are good for your health. These include vitamins A (beta-carotene), C and E, magnesium, zinc, phosphorous and folic acid. Folic acid may reduce blood levels of homocysteine, a substance that may be a risk factor for coronary heart disease.


Milk and Meat and its products

Both milk and meat products are a source of high-quality protein as determined from their protein content and essential amino acid profile. Milk is a source of calcium, phosphorus, zinc, magnesium and vitamin B2 and B12. Meat is a source of iron, zinc and vitamin B12.


Oil and fats

Fats and oils make an important contribution to adequate nutrition, they are a source of energy for the body, they insulate and protect the body's vital organs, they are a source of essential fatty acids and they are required for the absorption of the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K.
